At Scottburgh High School all the Grade 9 and Grade 10 Physical Science learners are required to do a science project. The best projects are exhibited at the school and for the first time this year, learners were awarded prizes. Thereafter 15 of the best projects were entered for the Southern KZN Regional Science Expo, which took place in Umzinto during August.

“The Eskom Science Fair is an excellent program in which children can use their love for science to create or investigate something intriguing”, says 15 year old Natalie Nortje who is a finalist for the National Eskom Expo, which will be held in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I was fortunate to go on this Eskom Expo journey, it started off with a simple project, inspired by something I love, I was proud to be chosen by my teacher for the Regional Expo, where I was awarded a gold medal and also won the best female project, I was also selected to represent my region, Southern KZN at the International Science Expo held in Johannesburg”. Natalie says the experience had already been amazing, little did she know the journey had just started.

Natalie and 15 other members of the Southern KZN team travelled to Boksburg and stayed in the Birchwood hotel, where she befriended and interacted with interesting people from all over the continent and around the world. After a week of fun, stressful interviews and uplifting comments, Natalie was awarded a silver medal. ‘Shortly after, I was called to Johannesburg for an interview for the selection to travel Turkey for the International Science fair, I was so surprised and overjoyed. I am now eagerly waiting to hear if I have been chosen, I have already achieved much more than I expected, this journey has truly been the best experience”.
